Isa Sadeeq Abubakar is the Chairman Board of trustees of Arewa Health Trust Initiative. He is a Medical Doctor and Professor of Public Health & Community Medicine at Bayero University Kano with 28 years of experience in teaching, consultancies, research and community service. A fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of England and a member of the American Public Health Association, Isa is also a member of different Academic and Professional bodies.
He has over the years, served as consultant to Governments at both State and National levels as well as a number of development partners including UN agencies, DFID and USAID-funded projects.
He has been involved in the teaching of under-graduate and post-graduate students of Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Dentistry. He has supervised many students at Masters and PhD levels as well as resident doctors. He has been an examiner at both under-graduate and post-graduate levels to many universities in Nigeria and Ghana. He has also been an Examiner at the West African College of Physicians for the past fifteen years, and recently as external examiner to Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. At different times, he has served as Part-time visiting lecturer to eight Universities.
Thus far, he has carried out external assessment for promotion to the rank of Reader and Professor for 31 candidates from many Nigerian universities and Ghana. He has been a member of Accreditation panels to many universities on behalf of the National Universities Commission, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria as well as the West African College of Physicians, and occasionally serving as the panel Chairman. He has also served as a member of Visitation panel to many academic institutions.
Between 2013 and 2016, he was Chairman Mentorship Committee of the College of Health Sciences, Bayero University Kano. Before then, he was the Director, post-graduate studies programme, Department of Community Medicine, Bayero University Kano.
Over the years, he has held several positions at both the University and the Teaching Hospital including acting Chief medical Director and Chairman Medical Advisory Committee at different times. Presently he is the Director, Centre for Infectious Diseases Research, Bayero University Kano and a Consultant Community Physician with Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Accreditation Officer and the immediate past Chairman Faculty of Community Health of the West African College of Physicians and a Fellow of Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. He is also the immediate past National Vice Chairman, Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria as well as a member of the Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance Nigeria. Isa is the Head, translational research unit at the Nigeria Snakebite Research and Intervention Centre (a member of the Africa Snakebite Research Group). He has served the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society as the National Public Relations Officer.
He has served in many committees of the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and the National Health Insurance Scheme. Presently, he is a member of the research functional working group of the Presidential Steering Committee on Covid-19 and a member of Kano State task force on Covid-19, actively involved in surveillance and risk Communication. He has carried out field researches/projects/consultancies in most Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory. He is Principal investigator in a number of commissioned researches and has to his credits, over 100 publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals. He is also an editorial consultant/adviser to a number of journals as well as a patron to many Organisations.
